原産地は、カナダ（ニューファンドランド島） です。
体重は、４５〜７０kg 程度です。
大型犬ですが、穏やかな性格なので家庭犬にもなっています。
また、水難救助犬（海や川での遭難者の救助）としても使われます。
毛色は、黒、白黒、茶色があります。
